Internationally renowned filmmaker Michael Winterbottom's latest feature is futuristic love story "Code 46," currently filming in Shanghai, Dubai, India and London. The UK Film Council's Premiere Fund is investing £1,565,063 of Lottery cash in the film, which stars Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton.
Robbins ("The Shawshank Redemption," "The Player") is known not only for his acclaimed performances but also for his award nominated directorial turns with films such as "The Cradle Will Rock," "Dead Man Walking" and "Bob Roberts." Samantha Morton ("Morvern Callar," "Minority Report") is also an award-winning actress with an Academy Award nomination for "Sweet and Lowdown" and a British Independent Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in "Morvern Callar."
"Code 46" is the fifth collaboration between director Michael Winterbottom and writer Frank Cottrell Boyce: they most recently collaborated on "24 Hour Party People" and "The Claim," both funded by Lottery money. "Code 46" is produced by Andrew Eaton for his and Winterbottom's company Revolution Films. Principal photography began on January 6, 2003.
Robert Jones, head of the Premiere Fund says of the investment, "It is exciting to be supporting Michael on this feature, especially as it is a genre rarely seen in British cinema. Above all, the original quality of the script and talent involved demonstrates the level of creativity the UK has to offer."
"Code 46" is a love story set in a recognisable and possible, near future. In this future cities are heavily controlled, only accessible through checkpoints. People cannot travel unless they have 'papelles', a special travel insurance coverage. Outside these cities, the desert has taken over. Shantytowns are jammed with non-citizens, people without 'papelles' whose lives are severely restricted by their lack of insurance cover.
The UK Film Council's Premiere Fund and BBC Films present in association with United Artists a Revolution Films production of a Michael Winterbottom Film, "Code 46." The Works is selling international rights, the BBC UK and United Artists has North American, Australasian, South African and Latin American rights.
Filming is scheduled for eight weeks in Shanghai, Dubai, Jaipur and London.
