For fans of great soundtracks, it doesn't come any better than this: Magic Johnson Music and MCA Records released the soundtrack to the upcoming Fox Searchlight film "Brown Sugar," which stars Taye Diggs ("The Best Man") and Sanaa Lathan ("Love & Basketball"). The soundtrack will feature hip-hop/R&B songs by some of today's top stars. All of the music from the soundtrack is featured in the film. (See below for a full track listing.)
The music industry setting for the film, recently wrapped, has made for some very interesting casting. Other cast members include Queen Latifah, Mos Def, and cameos by Method Man, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Dana Dane, Common, The Roots and other hip-hop artists. The film was written by Michael Elliot ("Carmen: A Hip Hopera" for MTV) and Rick Famuyiwa ("The Wood"). Rick Famuyiwa directed the film and Peter Heller produced. Earvin "Magic" Johnson served as executive producer.
About "Brown Sugar"
"Brown Sugar" tells the story of Dre (Taye Diggs) and Sidney (Sanaa Lathan). They attribute their friendship and the launch of their careers to one single childhood moment ... witnessing the day they met hip-hop on a New York street corner. Now some 15 years later, she is a revered music critic and he is a successful, though unfulfilled, music executive. As they lay down the tracks toward their futures, hip-hop isn't the only thing that keeps them coming back to that moment on the corner.
