In a history making moment, Michael Moore's "Bowling For Columbine" has been nominated by the Writers Guild of America for Best Original Screenplay. This marks the first time ever a non-fiction film has been nominated for a screenplay award by this prestigious organization. The film was submitted by United Artists to the WGA for awards consideration and the WGA deemed the film to be eligible to compete in the category of Best Original Screenplay, a first for a documentary film. "Bowling for Columbine" opened October 11, 2002 and has grossed over 18 million dollars in the United States and Canada and ranks as the highest grossing non-concert documentary ever released. The film is currently playing in over 50 markets nationwide.

“The nomination of a documentary for Best Original Screenplay by the WGA shows that it doesn't matter what tools you have to make a film or how you go about making it, but that the final result is powerful enough to move people,” said Michael Moore, “This has been a remarkable year in films and I am honored to be nominated among so many talented writers and filmmakers.”

“With this nomination 'Bowling for Columbine' has continued it's unflappable coarse of breaking all the rules. We at United Artists are ecstatic over this recognition from the WGA,” said Bingham Ray, president of United Artists. “We are proud that a nomination like this for a documentary will help to elevate all non-fiction films, showing how strong interest is for these kinds of films in the marketplace.”

A tour de force from filmmaker Michael Moore, "Bowling for Columbine" is an alternately humorous and horrifying documentary about firearms abuse in the United States. With his trademark charm and biting wit, Moore (director of "Roger and Me" and author of "Stupid White Men") sets off on a rollicking journey to the heart of the country hoping to discover why the American pursuit of happiness is so riddled with violence.

United Artists bought "Bowling for Columbine" at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, marking its World Premiere and the first time in 46 years a documentary had been selected for main competition. Immediately following its first public screening, the film received an unprecedented 15-minute standing ovation, ultimately winning the 55th Anniversary Special Jury Prize. Since the film's release and particularly in the last few months, "Bowling for Columbine" has garnered a number of prestigious awards for Best Documentary, including the National Board of Review, The Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Chicago Film Critics Association. The film has also been nominated for an IFP/Spirit Award for Best Documentary. In addition to Best Documentary notices, "Bowling for Columbine" was nominated for Best Picture by the London Film Critics Circle and the On-line Film Critics Society. The film is currently on over 160 critic's top-ten lists.

"Bowling For Columbine" is written, produced and directed by Michael Moore. Other producers include Salter Streeet Film's Charles Bishop and Michael Donovan; Kathlyn Glynn, Moore's producer and wife; and Jim Czarnecki, a friend and collaborator of Michael Moore for over ten years. The feature-length documentary is an Alliance Atlantis presentation of a Salter Street Films and Dog Eat Dog production. Salter Street Films is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alliance Atlantis.
