At the age of 13, Danica McKellar was cast as 'Winnie,' Fred Savage's love interest in the hit TV show "Wonder Years." Since that breakthrough role, McKellar has added writing, producing and directing to her ever-growing resume.
DANICA McKELLAR
You wrote/produced/directed Talking In Your Sleep. What's it like to wear so many hats on one film?
It's exciting. When you do a lot of acting your entire life, you see the entire set from one point of view. To have a chance to step back and pull it all together is really exciting. You want to do it all; you want to have a hand in everything. You want to get involved in how the wardrobe is going to fit in, how the sound design is going to be, and what the actors are going through. You want to put the entire thing together so you're really excited.
As the projects get bigger that I work on, I imagine I'll have to delegate more jobs out. But for now, if nothing else, this is a great learning experience and we're coming out with a real good product.
Did you have the idea of directing in mind when you wrote the script?
Oh yes, absolutely. I have a short film called Speechless that I already finished. It's been at festivals - and I wrote and directed it. SpeechlessTheMovie.com is my website and you can see trailers and pictures and behind-the-scenes stuff. We've had three awards so far [including] Best First Time Director at the Hollywood Underground Film Festival and Best Short at the California Independent Film Festival, which just happened in November. Martin Landau shook my hand after I won the award; it was a nice moment.
Is directing your passion at this time?
I don't know. I'm having such a good time that it's hard for me to say that I prefer directing to acting. I love acting - I always have and I always will. Directing is just something else that I love.
And I read that you're starring in a movie called Bathroom Boy.
Oh yeah, they are going to change the title. I don't know what they are going to change it to - something about a neighborhood. It's set in suburbia. It's about obsession and it's a dark comedy set in suburbia. Wendie Malick is in it from Just Shoot Me. She's wonderful. [It also stars] Stephen Root and Justin Long from Ed. It's a really good cast and it's funny as heck.
