Columbia Records/Sony Music Soundtrax released "Bandits" (Music From The MGM Motion Picture) on Tuesday, October 9, 2001. "Bandits" is a sophisticated bank heist romantic comedy starring Bruce Willis (Joe Blake), Billy Bob Thornton (Terry Collins), and Cate Blanchett (Kate Wheeler), which opened nationwide on October 12, 2001.

The film's music -- selected to drive the narrative, reference the characters, and amplify the emotional and psychological content of the screenplay -- is performed by Bob Dylan, Bonnie Tyler, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, Pete Yorn, Five For Fighting, Tanita Tikaram, Mark Knopfler, Aretha Franklin, In Bloom, Grover Washington, Jr. & Bill Withers, Michael Martin Murphey, and Christopher Young.

Directed by Academy Award(R)-winning director Barry Levinson ("Diner," "Rain Man," "Bugsy," "The Natural," "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Tin Men," "Avalon," "Disclosure," "Sleepers," "Wag the Dog," "Liberty Heights"), "Bandits" is the rollicking saga of the suave, irresistible Joe Blake, his hypochondriac partner Terry Collins, and Kate Wheeler, an average housewife who latches onto the prison escapees after banging into Terry with her car. Joe and Terry are a pair of two prison escapees on-the-run dreaming of South-Of-The-Border retirement after one last string of big scores. Kate is sick of the humdrum reality of her daily life. There is also a fourth member of the group of bandits -- Joe's young cousin Harvey J. Pollard (played by Troy Garity, a relative newcomer to film). Together, they set out on a cross-country spree of bumbling bank heists as 'The Sleepover Bandits,' becoming the most famous, and adored, thieves in the country. When both Joe and Terry fall in love with Kate and she tumbles for each of them, a complicated romantic triangulation ensues. Joe and Terry are flawed, less than ideal, individuals, but taken together, they make up the perfect man.

"I think there are a number of surprises in this film," says Levinson. "I don't think I've seen Billy Bob this way before, and I've certainly never seen Cate playing this kind of character, which is miles away from 'Elizabeth.' As for Bruce, it's not that he hasn't done comedic or romantic pieces, but I think this is comedic and romantic, yet Joe is also a tough character -- it's a good combination."
