"Pearl Harbor" Takes Summer's Top Spot at the Worldwide Box Office With Over $430 Million Gross

Touchstone Pictures'/Jerry Bruckheimer Films' romantic action/drama, "Pearl Harbor," crossed the $430 million threshold at the worldwide box office over Labor Day weekend, becoming the number-one film worldwide for the calendar year 2001 and the biggest international box office earner for the summer release period. "Pearl Harbor" now ranks as the third-most successful live-action film in Touchstone's history, behind "Armageddon" ($554 million) and "The Sixth Sense" ($530 million).

Commenting on the announcement, Dick Cook (Chairman of the Walt Disney Motion Picture Group) said, "Audiences around the world have clearly responded to "Pearl Harbor' and have made it a hit motion picture. Its North American gross is a great accomplishment by any measure, and we couldn't be more pleased that this film was equally able to reach international audiences in such huge numbers."

In North America, "Pearl Harbor's" opening weekend gross of $75.2 million qualified it as the largest opening in the Studio's history, the largest opening ever for a non-sequel, and the second-best opening in industry history, and it has now reached $197 million.

Internationally, "Pearl Harbor" has posted $234 million, and currently ranks as the number-one film for the year outside of North America. In each of more than 30 territories, "Pearl Harbor" now ranks as the number-one or number-two live-action title in BVI history.
