Reese Witherspoon will again step into Elle Woods' strappy shoes in MGM Pictures' "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, & Blonde," it was announced today by Chris McGurk, Vice Chairman and COO of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. Witherspoon will star and executive produce the film along with original producer Marc Platt from a script by Kate Kondell, based on the characters from the novel by Amanda Brown. In "Red, White, & Blonde," pretty-in-pink lawyer Elle Woods heads off to Washington to accessorize her rights, take on the political establishment, and initiate legislation in the name of her beloved dog, Bruiser. The film will most likely start filming in November 2002 for a July 2, 2003, release date in conjunction with the Independence Day holiday weekend.
"Reese Witherspoon is an amazing actress, and 'Legally Blonde' is one of the best comedies in recent memory," says McGurk. "We're thrilled to move forward with 'Legally Blonde 2' and entertain audiences again with the irresistible Elle Woods. I'm also grateful MGM's President Michael Nathanson and Executive Vice President Elizabeth Ingold were able to put together such an ambitious project."
"I was attracted to the idealistic quality of Elle's character and am happy to get back into her shoes," says Witherspoon. "Kate Kondell's script is great. It puts a positive spin on politics today. I look forward to inspiring young people to be interested in government."
"Elle Woods' character embodies hope, determination and optimism," says Platt, "qualities that resonate with everyone. Reese brings Elle to life in a unique way that captivates her audience and brings them to laughter and tears. I'm very excited to work with Reese again and embark on this sequel."
In the original film, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is expecting to get engaged when her boyfriend tells her she's not "serious" enough. To prove him wrong, Elle decides to attend Harvard Law School and prove to him that blondes can have fun -- and defend themselves in court. The film was a surprise runaway hit of the summer 2001 season, grossing just under $100 million domestically. Previous Articles |
