Producer Dan Halsted ("Any Given Sunday," "The Virgin Suicides") is known more for his work with dramatic films than for romantic comedies. His enthusiasm for "Serving Sara" had a lot to do with his desire to become involved in a lighter project.

The film needed a helmer who had a history directing romantic comedies and Halsted found the perfect director in Reginald Hudlin ("House Party," "The Ladies Man" and "Boomerang"). Halsted says, "Reggie Hudlin was clearly the very best choice for our director. He has a great sense for this kind of comedy, and after he did 'Boomerang' with Eddie Murphy, he had a terrific model for the film."

Sharing Halsted's excitement for the film, director Reginald Hudlin loved the "Serving Sara" script from the first moment he read it. Hudlin felt the script was one of the best he'd read in recent years.

REGINALD HUDLIN (Director)

How did you become involved in “Serving Sara?”
I was meeting with the studio about an entirely different movie and all of a sudden they started talking about this script. I hadn't read it and they told me about. I said, “No, you need to cast so-and-so. You need to change the third act.” Next thing you know, I'm on the set in Dallas.

Does that happen in Hollywood a lot?
It's happened every kind of way. It's a crazy place with no rules.

Why are you so attracted to romantic comedies?
I just really like entertaining people. You work hard all week, you cash your paycheck, and go out on a date. You want to see something that makes you laugh, that makes you cuddle up with the person you are with - that's romantic comedy.

What kind of physical training did you put Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley through for their roles?
Fortunately there was no training involved. Matthew Perry is such an amazing physical comic; he's really very scientific in his approach. Elizabeth used to be a dancer so she's in fantastic shape. They were both ready for anything I threw at them, and I threw as much as possible at them.

Was there a lot of improv on the set?
Absolutely. You don't have people this funny and tell them to stick to the script. You let them loose. Not whole scenes because we had a really tight script going in, which was great. But the thing is, how do we make it funnier? Each take we would keep pushing the envelope.

Why did you cast a very British actress in a role that requires her to live on a ranch in Texas?
We wanted the most mismatched couple possible. We had a very urbane guy and a British beauty, and we dump them on farm in Texas. That's conflict, and from conflict comes comedy.

Any favorite moments from filming?
I guess it would be between having Matthew Perry stick his arm up a bull's a** or having Elizabeth Hurley's pants torn off.
