This Week's Selection: "CHOCOLAT" Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress, "Chocolat" is a wonderfully sweet film with an outstanding cast. "Chocolat's" an amusing romantic comedy/drama, filled with love, life, and, of course, chocolate. The story centers around a single woman, Vianne Rocher, and her daughter, Anouk, who take on a stodgy town, livening it up by bringing its boring citizens tasty, irresistible, practically sinful, chocolate creations. The chocolates have a strange, pleasing affect on even the most reserved villager. Men rediscover their sex drives, women learn to believe in themselves, and the entire town is absorbed with the delectable creations Vianne cooks up.
"Chocolat" is a beautiful story, told with love and acted with passion. While it may not have been the most commercially successful release of 2000, it was definitely one of the best.

Vianne does have one detractor. The mayor of the town, Comte de Reynaud, hates change, hates anything slightly pleasurable, and connives - with the reluctant help of the town's new, young priest - to shut down Vianne's bakery. Vianne has strong supporters in the likes of Armande, her landlord and newfound friend, the timid and abused Josephine, and the mysterious traveler, Roux, who Vianne helps and eventually falls for, against the town's wishes.
