Matthew Davis plays a pro football player in "Blue Crush," which was lucky for him. Lucky in that most of the characters in the film are surfers and Davis wasn't enthralled with the idea of becoming a surfer.

On playing the love interest in this female dominated film, Matthew Davis got a taste of what actresses go through. Davis says, "I did feel the pressure I've always heard actresses talk about in playing a supporting role as the love interest. You have to be focused on your diet and staying in shape and looking good at all times. I really came to understand those elements. It's not easy."

Kate Bosworth notes, "The role reversal is what's so great about this movie for young woman. The guy isn't a Prince Charming who saves the day for her. He inspires her but she saves her own day."

MATTHEW DAVIS (Matt Tollman)

Did you know how to surf prior to the film?
No, I didn't. I had to learn how to surf for the movie. It was quite an adventure, let me tell you. It's very hard and very difficult. I was the only guy out there that couldn't surf. All these girls are out there surfing and kicking ass and riding waves, and I was just floundering and trying not to drown. I got it after awhile - don't get me wrong - I got it (laughing).

How would you describe your role?
I play Matt Tolman who is a pro quarterback. He runs into Anne Marie [played by Kate Bosworth] at a hotel and the sparks fly and love ensues.

“Blue Crush” has been called a 'girl empowerment' film. Do you see it that way?
Definitely - yes, definitely. It's an empowerment film and girls are the lead characters in it so it is a girl empowerment film. The great thing about it is that the message is kind of universal. You can interchange any of these characters. The message is not about winning and it's not about losing. It's about trying your best, it's about overcoming your fear and rising to the occasion. I think that's what is great about the message.

I've read that of all the actors on the film, you were the most afraid of surfing. Is that true?
(Laughing) Yes, yes, yes! I'm phobic of sharks, deep water, the ocean - you name it. So I was in the middle of all of my deepest fears.

Did you conquer them?
Yes. That's the great thing about it. I had an opportunity to conquer my fears. I learned how to surf and had a great time doing it. I met some wonderful people. I can't say that I'll do it again; I might, but I can't say I will.

The cast was mainly female. What was it like working on the set?
Lots of estrogen. Lots and lots of estrogen and great fun.

And your next projects?
I have a movie coming out called “Below” and another called “Lone Star State of Mind” with James King and Joshua Jackson.

“Below” is a military film?
Right. I play Eugene O'Dell. I'm a Jr. Lieutenant that's trapped below the water because we're being tracked by German destroyers. So what happens is that all these things start to go wrong on the submarine and we're trying to take care of the problem before we all die.
