Despite her lack of acting experience, director John Stockwell claims that casting Sanoe Lake as one of the main characters was a no-brainer. Sanoe is a native Hawaiian, an incredible surfer, and a model. Even without any film credits to her name, Sanoe fit the part so well it would have been nearly impossible to find an actress better suited to the role.

Her real life desire to be a surf wear designer also came in to play as writer/director Stockwell decided to add that characteristic to Sanoe's character, Lena. After working with Sanoe Lake on "Blue Crush," Stockwell declared, "Even if Sanoe wasn't a surfer I would have cast her in the part. That's how good she was in the role."

SANOE LAKE (Lena)

What was it like working with actresses who weren't surfers? Did you have to protect them on the waves?
No, I didn't have to protect them. We had an amazing water crew who taught the girls how to surf, and taught them from the ground up. They taught them why the wave breaks the way it does, because of the reef underneath and the way the swell comes in and how the shallowness of the water plays into it. I was just out there to support them and to make them feel really comfortable, honestly. I gave them little tips like, "Hey, hold your leash this way."

So you never had to come to their rescue?
No, never. They did a really great job. Kate and Michelle went head-on into it. It actually surprised me about how gung-ho they were about the whole thing.

Surfing styles are really popular. As a surfer and a model, how do you feel about non-surfers dressing like surfers?
If non-surfers want to dress like surfers, it's all good. You see people who dress like skaters and they don't skate. They dress grunge, or they dress hip-hop - and they don't rap. To me it's all about what makes you feel good. If it makes you feel good to dress like a surfer, then hey, game on.

As a real surfer, do you think the film captures the spirit of surfing unlike a “Gidget” movie?
It definitely captures the spirit of surfing. I was actually surprised when I saw the first cut of the film. I'm like, “Wow! They did a really great job.”
