Producer Brian Grazer and writer/director John Stockwell needed an athletic, believable actress to carry off "Blue Crush's" main character, Anne Marie. They found exactly what they were looking for in Kate Bosworth. Her athletic ability led her to her first feature film role in "The Horse Whisperer" and made her the perfect choice for one of "Blue Crush's" female competitive surfers.

Director John Stockwell recalled that his first impression of Kate Bosworth was that she might have been too refined for the role. Any misgivings were quickly vanquished when she arrived in Oahu. "She became the character physically and mentally and the pro surfers in our movie all said, 'Yeah, she could be one of us'," said Stockwell.

KATE BOSWORTH (Anne Marie)

You've said before that this film is about empowering women. Can you tell me your take on the film's message?
In a way this film is about anybody, not just girls. Hopefully we can motivate people to basically go out and live their dreams and while watching the movie, have a lot of fun. It's an adventure; it's an amazing ride - this movie.

Were you scared tackling the role of a competitive surfer?
I got off the plane the first time on the North Shore when one of the biggest swells of the winter was hitting. I got off the plane and looked at Sanoe Lake and I said, “I think I'm going to die.” She just looked at me and said, “You're going to be fine.” I'm very happy that I'm standing here talking to you (laughing).

Sanoe's been surfing a long time. How much did her knowledge of the sport help you out while you were filming scenes?
She's amazing. Sanoe has one of the best styles that I've ever seen on a surfboard, or in general, but on a surfboard, too. Just to have her on the water as my support, I couldn't have asked for anybody better.

Besides surfing, your character is involved in a love story in this film. Can you talk about that?
In the movie, Matt Davis plays a pro football player who comes to Hawaii for a little vacation. We fall in love and I have to make a decision to go sort of the easy route of falling in love and being cared for by him, or thinking about tackling this gigantic 20' wave in competition. I think what's neat about the whole love story is that he's a modern day prince. I think that instead of babying her, he supports her. I think that's a really amazing thing nowadays.

How was the atmosphere on the set? Was there much bonding going on off camera?
We lived together. Michelle and Sanoe are two of my greatest friends for life now. We clicked like I've never clicked with anybody before. We were very lucky because it could have been a disaster, that's for sure (laughing). I love them, I really do.
