CHRIS KLEIN (Oz)

What was it like to have J.B. Rogers direct this one?
He was there - as the 1st Assistant Director on "American Pie." He's part of the family.

You worked with J.B. Rogers as a director before. Did that make a difference? It's very different to be the 1st A.D. as opposed to director.
Yeah, it's a very different role, of course. He was one of the toughest 1st Assistant Director's I'd ever known. As a director, he's a little bit more laid back. But I think he's great - he's from the Farrelly Bros. background. He's worked with the Farrelly Bros. before the Farrelly Bros. were the Farrelly Bros.

Do you like the "juvenile" type of humor?
The coolest thing about "American Pie" and "American Pie 2" is the situations that are in the movie are not blown so far out of proportion you can't believe them. The reason that it's funny is because these are situations that could actually happen to people. And these characters are real, and we've seen these characters grown up. We feel for these characters and what they go through, you sit there and go through or think, “Oh my God, no, what's happening there?” And that's what makes it so fun, that these situations are real and they happen organically within a story.

Would you come back for a third?
You can't sit here and talk about a third one, this one isn't out. You gotta let this one come out, whatever happens, happens, and it's one step at a time.

How do you know when a gross or “juvenile” scene is going to work and when it isn't?
For "American Pie" and "American Pie 2," Adam Herz, the writer, and the producers and the director, they put it together. Comedy is a science and it's not an exact science. It's one of those things. What makes those scenes so great, what makes Seann Scott getting peed on so great, is him acting it out - is the reaction. Like I was saying, that sort of stuff is real, and it is a risk. You get a better answer from those guys who are actively involved in it.

When do you think you'll be too old to play teenage characters?
When I'm in my coffin.

How do you decide on your roles? What attracts you to a part?
I look for a good story, and once you find that, an opportunity to work with accomplished people that you can really learn and grow from.

Do you have any hobbies, besides acting?
I've kind of gotten into mountain biking a little bit. I've got two buddies down in San Diego that live in the hills of La Jolla. It's beautiful there, and I've kind of gotten into that. I really like to travel and I'd like to do more of it. Those two things have kind of peaked my interest. I've also started reading a lot, which might be funny, but I've never taken reading very seriously, reading books and things. I've had my favorite and stuff but it was never a hobby, but I've really gotten into it - reading books. Sally Field, when I was working with her on "Say It Isn't So," she told me you have to read books, you have to start reading and getting into it and find the love of reading. Then she gave me two books. She gave me "Lonesome Dove" and "Shogun" and after that, I love picking books up, I love - like she said - rushing home to finish. I love rushing home to finish a book and I've really gotten into it.
