Rick Overton portrays Deputy Pete, sidekick and faithful - but lazy - assistant to Sheriff Sam (Kari Wuhrer). Along with comic Doug E. Doug, Overton provides most of the film's funniest lines.

RICK OVERTON (Deputy Pete)

Can you tell me a little bit about your role in "Eight Legged Freaks?"
Deputy Pete works for Sam, played by Kari Wuhrer. She's my boss, the sheriff of this town called Prosperity, Arizona. It's the town where they shot "U-Turn" - a tiny, tiny little place that's really called Superior, Arizona. It's a ditched mining town just used for movies now. It's in the middle of nowhere.

Deputy Pete moved to Prosperity to get away from the madness of Tucson. To show you how lazy this guy is, he wanted all the medical and dental benefits without ever having to fill out one single form or solve a crime. He's not like Barney Fife, whereas Barney Fife was scared to shoot, I'll shoot, I'll empty a gun out, but it's to get me out of working hard somewhere else. He just hates working. Of course, this is the town that gets attacked by giant spiders and now he has to work.

What was it like working with the CGI stuff?
I love that stuff, I'm a big fan of it. I'm a big sci-fi geek myself.

Were you a fan of the old mutant monster films from the 1950s?
Totally a fan of those. I was raised on all of those. The big fiberglass ant with Teamsters pushing it up a hill with sticks and stuff. You could almost see the guy working the head. There'd be boom shots in there. Those effects were fabulous for the times, but these effects are "Jurassic Park"-level perfection, absolute 3-D blended perfectly things, but with the spirit of the 50s.

You have an interesting spider goo scene in your patrol car. Can you talk a little about the filming of that scene?
I was just improvising that scene. I improvised most of the film; my part was supposed to be short. They brought me in because I'm a "Second City" trained kind of improv comic. I started scribbling little notes on the side of the script and one of them was, "How's about we take a rubber tube and glue it to the top of the car and when the jumping spider lands, I'll put my Baretta up to the roof and then, wait for my face, let me take my long Oliver Hardy burn as I get hit in the face?" When it got a laugh in dailies, Dean said, "Okay, let's play more." Basically I'm winging a lot of the film.

It's totally amazing. It's a lucky break and I'm infinitely grateful to Dean Devlin [Producer] and to Roland Emmerich [Producer] and to Pete Winther [Executive Producer] and to Ellory Elkayem [Director]. He did a great job and I look forward to working with him again. They are great guys and they gave me the shot of a lifetime. I'm thrilled.
