This Week's Selection: "SWINGERS"

"You're so money and you don't even know it."

Jon Favreau wrote and starred in this comedy about a group of buddies looking for love. Set in Hollywood, the film was directed by Doug Liman who also directed one of my personal favorite indie films, Go. Swingers helped introduce Vince Vaughn as a rising star. The role of Trent seems tailor-made for this innovative, appealing actor.

Mike (Favreau) has just broken off a very long-term relationship in New York, and moves to LA to become a comedy star. He's lonely and his loneliness is bringing his buddies down. Mike's ultra-hip best friend, Trent (Vince Vaughn), tries to get Mike to move on with life, but Mike is stuck in a rut. Bent on getting Mike back amongst the living, Trent and the crew drag Mike to a series of Hollywood parties, bars, and even on a spontaneous trip to Vegas.

Some of the scenes in this film are roll-on-the-floor hilarious. Mike's agonizing series of late night/early morning phone calls to a girl he just met are downright hysterical. He leaves an increasingly desperate series of messages on her machine, basically turning what could have been a potential girlfriend into someone who more than likely will change her number and who does eventually wind up calling him only to tell him to never call her again. There's also a scene reminiscent of the group striding down the street in Reservoir Dogs that was clearly meant as a tribute to Quentin Tarantino, and which plays out perfectly in Swingers. There are also quite a few relationship question and answer sessions between Mike, Trent, and Sue (Patrick Van Horn) that are classics. Anyone who's ever sat around with a group of friends discussing their inability to understand the opposite sex is going to totally relate to these discussions.

Trivia: Vince Vaughn's father is the lucky gambler at the $100 table. Jon Favreau's mom is the winner at the $5 table.
