The filmmakers used narration (provided by Matt Damon) to communicate what Spirit is thinking. The emotions behind his thoughts and deeds were expressed through songs by Bryan Adams and music by Hans Zimmer.

"The songs are the emotional voice of Spirit," says director Kelly Asbury. "Bryan Adams has a very emotional, heartfelt singing style, which is appropriate for this because the songs tell the story from Spirit's heart. In that way, Bryan is the heart of the film."

"Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" reunited producer Jeffrrey Katzenberg with composer Hans Zimmer. Katzenberg calls Zimmer "without question, one of the greatest collaborators I've had making animated movies over the years." Producer Mireilli Soria adds, "What Hans has done throughout the movie is create themes that evoke the emotion of the story. There is the homeland theme, the mother's theme, the love theme... Hans helps to tell the story with these musical phrases."

What was your experience like working on this film?
They gave me a lot of freedom to do what I wanted. DreamWorks is an amazing company and Jeffrey Katzenberg, whose idea it was, knew exactly what he wanted but he didn't know how to tell me what that was. Lyrically, you had to be right there at the moment that it is happening.

You've been nominated for many awards having to do with music for films. Do you feel like there might be a Grammy or other award out there for this one?
I've been down that carpet many times and I don't like to guess. I've had many songs for films and thought they were beautiful too, but I don't even want to go there. I'm happy with this, the music is great, that's what my main thing is.

You spent a lot of time on this project. What's it like now that it's opening?
I'm really happy that it's pressed and it's a CD now, and all I really have to do is sit here and chit chat about it every once and awhile. When you finish an album, you've got to let it go.

HANS ZIMMER (Composer)

Do you create the music for movies while you're watching the film?
Sometimes before [it's finished], sometimes in the middle of it, sometimes we change everything around - whenever I get an idea. It's pretty haphazard.

What was your impression of working on this film?
The images and the artistry of this film are so amazing. You just try to be as good as they are.
