NICK SWARDSON ('Mocha')
What's the process like working with Jamie Kennedy? Is it crazy?
No, it's great. Jamie and I have been friends for a while. He had the idea for this movie five years ago and he gave me the idea and I wrote the original script. We just had a blast. Jamie's really one of the greatest guys.
Do you and Jamie sit down in a room together and toss ideas around?
Yeah. I got the ball rolling on the writing and then he would sit there and we'd bounce ideas off of each other. He's very creative, obviously. If you see his show, the guy can do anything. It was fun and we'd write a joke and we'd high-five each other (laughing).
Acting in the film and writing the script, did you ever get too possessive and not let anyone change your lines?
No, because I'm really into improvising. I'm a stand-up comic, too, so I'm really used to improvising. I was not at all like, “I said 'Hello' not 'Hi,' I wrote 'Hello.'” I wasn't crazy about it. It was really cool. John Whitesell the director was really cool about letting us do that. He gave us a lot of freedom.
Were you responsible for any of the raps that made it into the film?
No, I'm responsible for all the beat box things. I do all the beats for Jamie. It was very tough; I had to go to Beat Box Camp for three years before we started shooting to get it down just right.
Is that like band camp?
It is but there's no band. It's all your mouth (laughing).
