JOANNA CANTON (Sarah)

Who do you portray in this film?
I play the role of Sarah who is Mia Kirshner's character's best friend. Essentially, I think that my character represents the part of her life that she leaves. We come from less means than these other girls - Rachel True, Meredith Monroe and Dominique Swain - they are upper-class. I've been her friend for years and years, ever since kindergarten. I think that part of her becoming part of this new life is also abandoning our friendship. She's leaving me behind so I represent what used to be.

Do you confront her about what she's doing?
Absolutely. There's a scene in the film where I go to her and ask, “What's going on? Where've you been? What are you doing?” We share a moment but she's already gone to that place, and there's nothing else I can do.

And you just completed work on a pilot?
I'm working on a project for Ryan Murphy, who created “Popular.” I'm working with Delta Burke and Gregory Harrison.

What's your character like in that?
She goes to boarding school, comes from a lot of old money, but she's very eccentric. She eats paste - very strange. It's all sort of schoolgirl uniforms and it's for the WB. I'm very hopeful for it.
