STEVE JOHNSON (Special Effects - Edge FX, Inc.)
What was the most challenging aspect of working on Dreamcatcher?
We did a lot of different things in this film. The aliens go through a series of transformations in the film. They start off as a spore-like fungus that then infects humans. Once it infects humans, they grow inside the body and use the human body as a host. Then they burst out in a Stephen King way, which is pretty awful. Once they are out of the body, they still continue to transform. So there's a lot of work in this film.
Maybe one of the more challenging aspects of the film is that Larry Kasdan had not really done a special effects film before. So there was kind of an educational aspect to my job, too. But that's one of the reasons he wanted to do this film, he wanted to learn about it.
Did he give you a lot of freedom?
Absolutely not (laughing). The thing is, it's funny
Because he didn't want to make a monster movie and he knows that my history, and my profession, is to make monster movies, he basically used me as a sounding board so that anything that I thought should happen, he did the opposite of. If I said it was black, he thought it should be white. No, I'm just kidding (laughing).
What was the hardest scene or creature for you to create for Dreamcatcher?
Probably the most difficult sequence is the sequence in which Jason discovers the hunter in the bathroom. You can see that this alien has burst out of him. We have several sequences in the film that we relied heavily on puppetry and animatronics to do - most of the sh*t weasels.
Why do you think audiences love horror movies so much?
It's a free ride. It's a great way to be scared. It's like a roller coaster; I really think it's that simple. You know that it's safe but it just pumps you up and gets you somewhere that you don't necessarily want to get to in the real world. I think that's amazing.
What's your next project?
We've got a few projects coming out. We did The Cat in the Hat with Mike Myers - we turned him into the The Cat. We did The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Sean Connery. There's a lot of effects for that one. And we're doing Spider-Man now, we are doing Dr. Octopus.
