What Women Want Isn't That Easy to Figure

"What Women Want" is a romantic comedy starring that heartthrob from down under, Mel Gibson. How could a studio go wrong with that? I have to preface this by stating that I'd pay to watch Mel Gibson brush his teeth, sit reading a newspaper, or lay in bed, sound asleep, snoring away. This isn't a review of the movie itself, it's more a take on the commercials and trailers, and the way they portray women's thoughts.

Seeing the commercials for this new movie made me question who writes these things, and do they presently reside on planet Earth? The movie's premise is relatively simple. Mel Gibson has been given the special ability - some might consider it a disability - to read women's minds. The trailers and commercials show a very handsome, hunky, Mel, walking by women of all ages and races, hearing them subconsciously wondering about his crotch or admiring his muscular buttocks.

Granted, if I saw Mel Gibson walking down the street, I would more than likely openly admire his "features." But, he's not playing the role of Mel Gibson in this movie. He's playing the part of a Chicago advertising executive. So would I lose my concentration to fixate on a Chicago advertising executive's body? I'm thinking no.

It all boils down to what women really think about as opposed to what men wish women think about. I spend a large majority of my day wishing for someone to balance my checkbook, decide what's for dinner, and dreaming about being able to spend more than 10 minutes at a time, uninterrupted, surfing the Internet. My thoughts are far from the thoughts of the women depicted in the ads for "What Women Want." I'm wagering that if you took a poll of women on the street, their wishes would come closer to reflecting mine than those of the commercial's version of working women.
