The Screen Actors Guild presented its coveted Actor® statuette for the outstanding motion picture and primetime television performances of 2001 at the 8th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® ceremony on Sunday, March 10, 2002 in Los Angeles. Ian McKellen kicked off the show by delivering a speech quoting Shakespeare and describing the thrill of being an actor. McKellen also had the honor of receiving the night's first award with his win in the Actor in a Supporting Role category.

Wrapping up in just under two hours, the SAG Awards honored actors and ensemble casts in five film categories and eight television categories. Edward Asner received this year's Life Achievement Award, presented to him by his close friend, Tom Selleck. Newcomer and nominee for her role in "I Am Sam," Dakota Fanning, introduced a segment honoring child stars, featuring clips from films starring Natalie Wood, Judy Garland, Drew Barrymore, Elijah Wood, Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney. SAG also paid tribute to actors who have passed away during the year in a moving montage of clips introduced by Minnie Driver.
