In "The Life of David Gale," Laura Linney plays Professor Constance Harraway, a very vocal presence in the Texas anti-death penalty group, DeathWatch. Her friendship with David Gale (Kevin Spacey) is seen through flashbacks as Gale sits on death row awaiting his execution.

As one of the lead characters in the center of a film that revolves around a highly controversial subject, Linney portrays Constance Harraway as a strong, passionate woman determined to make a stand despite overwhelming odds and amidst personal hardship.

The actress spoke about her character, Kevin Spacey, and the death penalty while at the film's February 18, 2003 special Los Angeles screening:

LAURA LINNEY ('Constance')

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a role this tough?
I'm an actor so it's not that tough, to be honest with you. When the material is that good, and the character is that well drawn, and your fellow actors are great, and your director is terrific, it comes together very easily. That's not to say that we don't do a lot of work because we do, but it's exhilarating and that's what you hope for. It sort of pushes you in places that you don't expect to go.

And working opposite Kevin Spacey?
It's fantastic. He has one of the fastest minds of anyone I've ever met. His wit is just unique so he was terrific to be around.

What did you like the most about your character?
That her entire life was about something other than herself.

How do you feel about the death penalty?
You know, I'm not going to answer that and here's why: I have a very strong opinion about it and at the next junket, I'll be more than happy to talk about it. But I don't want people to go into this movie and even for two seconds think about what I think. It's not important what I think. I want them to think about the movie and what the characters think. So I'll answer that question at the next junket.

You're in a very disturbing scene in which your character is naked. Was that a body double?
No. That was all me.
