Director Alan Parker holds double Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey in high regard. Parker describes Spacey as a consummate actor who is unafraid of revealing his character's flaws. "He takes these imperfections by the scruff of the neck and throws them right back at you, newly formed and noble," says Parker. That's high praise from a man who's not known for being overly effusive while speaking of his actors.

At the February 18, 2003 special screening of "The Life of David Gale," cast members from the film spoke passionately about the dramatic thriller, the death penalty, Alan Parker, and working with one another:

KEVIN SPACEY ('David Gale')

What was your impression of director Alan Parker?
In Alan Parker's history of film, he's dealt with all kinds of social injustice and political sensitivities but he always has made the characters more important than the politics. I felt in his hands we would be able to tell an entertaining film that grapples with a lot of issues that we're dealing with in this country currently right now.

He's dedicated, he's clear, he's direct, and he plants the right information in your head when you need it. Even though the film was quite serious, we had a remarkably fun time making it.

Can you describe David Gale?
I play a pretty popular professor of philosophy at a University in Texas. He's also one of the leading opponents of the death penalty. In the course of the film, he's accused of a crime, which you see so you know whether he did it or whether he didn't. And a little later he's accused of the murder of his colleague, which you don't see so you don't know whether he's innocent or guilty. The film operates in this ticking clock manner about whether you'll ever find out if he's innocent or guilty.

Was this a difficult film for you?
I don't know that difficult is the word that I'd use. I think there are challenging scenes but difficult implies that it was hard to get there, or hard to understand what the scenes were all about. Some of the scenes that, for me, were the most important and tender and filled with emotional commitment, [were the scenes] with Laura Linney. We just had the most extraordinary time developing the relationship. I admire her enormously and her commitment to this part was remarkable.
