Kate Bosworth’s last big role found her surfing off the coast of Hawaii. In “Win a Date With Tad Hamilton,” Bosworth’s character starts off in a lot less glamorous surroundings. Bosworth plays Rosalee, a small town grocery store clerk who has a crush on Hollywood hunk, Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel). Rosalee’s dreams of meeting Tad come true when she wins a ‘Win a Date With Tad Hamilton’ contest thrown by Tad’s managers as a way of repairing his public image.

When director Robert Luketic (“Legally Blonde”) took on this project, the first role he cast was that of Rosalee. The difficult part of the search was in finding an actress who was believable as a grocery clerk and as a beautiful young woman who gets a Hollywood heartthrob to fall for her. Dozens of actresses were considered, however when Kate Bosworth auditioned, the filmmakers knew they had their Rosalee.

“The big surprise in Kate’s audition was that not only could she portray the charm and innocence we needed, she was also very funny. Within 30 seconds of her starting her audition, it was, ‘Here’s Rosalee,’” recalls Luketic.

Is your father like your movie dad, Gary Cole?
No, but that was actually one of the scenes he chuckled at most, I think. That's the funniest thing about portraying certain things on screen, sitting next to your parents and they get to see this glimpse of me kissing another guy. I'm thinking, "Okay, no one would ever normally see that. A father would never normally watch." So he's forced to sit there and watch it.

And you’re necking in a parked car no less.
I know. It's so funny because you can feel…it's palpable, the energy. He was sitting next to me and we were all laughing, and all of sudden this came up. I'm [silent] and sitting there very straight and holding my breath. And then [I asked him], "You alright, dad?" And he's like, “Yeah, it's so funny.”

Do your parents recognize their daughter in this character?
I sure hope so. That would be my hope. My favorite thing about this character is I think I took basically the best qualities in me and kind of poured it all into one character. That was a really, really great space to live in for a few months. To go to work every day and just look at things in the most positive light, and hopefully try to take that away from this.

What qualities do you admire about Rosalee?
I would say that she's incredibly true to herself, or she tries to be. She tries to see the good in everything, the silver lining, which is so important in life. And just a certain kindness that I find really endearing in this character and I enjoyed doing.

Have you ever met a celebrity who shattered your illusions?
You know what? I really haven't, which I feel fortunate actually. But on the other hand, being in this business and knowing how you really can't judge a book by its cover, and just knowing how different things probably are than how they're portrayed, I try not to have a certain image of somebody. If I do, I keep that in mind because I know that there are so many different things said about me that I'm thinking, "Well, take it with a grain of salt." You know what I mean? You can't exactly put anybody in a box.

Did your parents try to learn about the business after you started acting in films?
They're actually pretty savvy on their own, which is really thoroughly sweet. But sometimes my mom will pull things out, like she says something and I say, "You were on the Internet today, weren't you?" And she'll say, "Yeah, I was." I sort of catch her because I think there's no way she could know that. "I hear so and so is up for this part."

Did you have a celebrity crush?
The ‘Tad’ for me, I just remember Brad Pitt in “A River Runs Through It.” I remember just thinking he was so cute. I can't remember what year that was. [Maybe] '92, so I was about 12, I think, somewhere around there. I thought he was really, really cute. It must've been around that time because that came out around the time as “The Horse Whisperer.” Robert Redford had directed [both films] so I sort of saw it for that [reason].

What’s the best date you've been on?
I've been so, so lucky. I've never really been on an official date to be honest, which is really weird. The person I've been interested in, I've been with for kind of chunks of years, and so I've just been really lucky. It'd be hard to pick one just because of that. There's sort of 100 magical ones.

What's a wild night out for you?
Oh God, I feel so boring all of a sudden, searching my brain for something wild. I'm so low-key. I hate to say it, but I really am. I don't enjoy the wild side. It can be fun to go out in Hollywood once in a while and have a laugh, but that would be so occasionally. I'm mostly traveling. I've been traveling a lot this past year, which is great.
