Toronto - September 8, 2003

From MDP Worldwide Entertainment

Newmarket Films has acquired all US theatrical rights to MDP Worldwide's "Monster," the Aileen Wuornos biopic starring Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci, it was announced today at the Toronto Film Festival by President Bob Berney.

Theron stars as Wuornos, a highway prostitute who was executed in Florida for killing seven men during the 1980s; Christina Ricci plays her girlfriend, Selby Wall; and Bruce Dern is cast as her friend Thomas, who tries to protect her in the end.

"Charlize gives a riveting performance, making a complete transformation into Aileen Wuornos," says Berney. "It's a shocking and strangely moving film that we are extremely proud to add to our roster."

Newmarket will open the film in December for Academy consideration and expand in January.

"We are delighted to be collaborating with Newmarket," stated MDP company spokesman David Gaynes. "They have proven that they have a great ability to market and distribute compelling and though-provoking films such as 'Monster.'"

DEJ Productions has acquired all other North American rights and will collaborate with Newmarket on the theatrical release. MDP is handling all international sales for the film. The Newmarket deal was brokered by Berney and his partners, William Tyrer and Chris Ball, with Business Affairs executive Robert Fyvolent and for MDP by David Garber of Lantern Lane and attorney Greg Bernstein.

Written and directed by Patty Jenkins, the film was produced by Brad Wyman, Donald Kushner, Charlize Theron, Mark Damon and Sammy Lee. Executive Producers are Clark Peterson, Meagan Riley-Grant, Stewart Hall, Andreas Grosch and Andreas Schmid. The film was produced by MDP Filmproducktions GmbH and VIP Medienfonds.
