Columbia Pictures Breaks "The Da Vinci Code"

Dan Brown's Bestseller Headed to the Big Screen

By , About.com Guide

June 27, 2003 - Columbia Pictures has obtained the rights to Dan Brown's bestselling thriller "The Da Vinci Code," according to an announcement by Amy Pascal, Chairman of Columbia Pictures.

Brown's novel entered the market in the top spot on the New York Times Bestseller list. The property was sought after by most of the major studios, with Columbia Pictures eventually landing the deal. Columbia Pictures also picked up the rights to Brown's "Angels and Demons" and other future books featuring the Robert Langdon character.

The story focuses on a 2,000 year-old conspiracy in which clues have been planted in famous pieces of art, including the paintings of Leonard Da Vinci.

In a statement issued by Columbia Pictures, Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment John Calley said, "Dan Brown is a master storyteller who has created an amazingly visual page turner. 'The Da Vinci Code' is a thrill ride unlike any that we have read or seen in a long, long time. The Robert Langdon character is a compelling hero and sleuth and we can't wait to bring this puzzle to the screen."
