Nikki Rocco, president, distribution, Universal Pictures, stated, "With its classic storytelling and strong, memorable characters, 'Seabiscuit' was the perfect counter-programming antidote to all the youth-oriented, effects- driven, high-tech titles in the marketplace. Not only was it embraced by critics, I haven't seen audience reaction this enthusiastic to a film in years. They leave the theater exhilarated and eager to tell their friends how much they love it. With this kind of word-of-mouth, we are in for a long run."
Exit polls conducted across the country indicated that 97% of the audience surveyed rated the film either excellent or very good, against a norm of 78%, and 88% of the people tested said that they would definitely recommend the film to others, versus a norm of 55%. In addition, the film received an overall CinemaScore of "A." Many exhibitors reported that there was loud and sustained applause at the end of the film.
From Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment, "Seabiscuit," an American epic of triumph and perseverance set during the Great Depression, is based on the best-selling book that was one of the most popular and widely read non-fiction books of recent years. It is the story of three men -- a jockey (Tobey Maguire), a businessman (Jeff Bridges) and a trainer (Chris Cooper) -- and the down-and-out racehorse that took them and the entire nation on the ride of a lifetime.
Written for the screen and directed by Gary Ross ("Pleasantville," "Dave"), "Seabiscuit" is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Gary Ross and Jane Sindell.
