"Monster-in-Law" revolves around an overbearing mother named Viola (Fonda) who fears she will be replaced when her son (Vartan) gets engaged to a professional temp (Lopez). Viola becomes the world's worst mother-in-law in an attempt to break the couple up. Sykes will play Ruby, Viola's wisecracking, straight-talking assistant.
"Monster-in-Law" is being directed by Robert Luketic ("Legally Blonde") and produced by Paula Weinstein and Benderspink. New Line Cinema's executive vp production Richard Brener and creative executive Magnus Kim are overseeing production for the studio, with a May 3 production start date planned. "Monster-in-Law" is scheduled for a 2005 release.
A veteran stand-up comedian, Sykes previously headlined her own sitcom, Wanda at Large, and has appeared on The Chris Rock Show and lent her voice to Crank Yankers. Her feature film credits include "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" and "Pootie Tang". Sykes first book, Yeah, I Said That, is scheduled to be published in the fall.
