In 1953, when women's roles were rigidly defined, novice art history professor Katherine Watson (Roberts) begins teaching at the prestigious all-female college Wellesley. Despite its academic reputation for educating the best and the brightest, its still an environment where success is measured by how well their students marry. Encouraging these women to strive for a more enlightened and self-fulfilled future, Watson challenges the administration and inspires her students to look beyond the image of what is, and consider the possibilities of what might be.
The ensemble cast is headed by Julia Roberts, one of todays most popular and successful actresses. Ms. Roberts has starred in dozens of hit films including "Erin Brockovich" which earned her a Best Actress Oscar and "Pretty Woman," for which she received an Academy Award nomination. "Mona Lisa Smile" is directed by awardwinning director Mike Newell ("Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Pushing Tin," "Donnie Brasco").
