April 24, 2003 - New Line Cinema's "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" is now the fifth highest grossing film of all time, taking in $910 million according to Rolf Mittweg, New Line Cinema's president and chief operating officer, worldwide distribution and marketing.
The second film of the "The Lord of the Rings" has now passed up its predecessor, "The Fellowship of the Ring." According to New Line, the two films have grossed close to $1.8 billion worldwide.
In a press release announcing "The Two Towers'" move into fifth place Mittweg said, "This is a landmark moment for both our studio and this trilogy. This breakthrough speaks to the commitment and ingenuity of our teams here and abroad, and ultimately about Peter Jackson's magnificent film. We look forward to the worldwide release of 'The Return of the King,' the third and final film, on December 17th of this year which will be the culmination of this unprecedented and infinitely rewarding endeavor."
"The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" falls in place behind "Titanic" ($1.8 billion), "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" ($976 million), "Star Wars, Episode 1 The Phantom Menace" ($926 million) and "Jurassic Park" ($920 million).
