Pierce Brosnan Laws of Attraction

Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan in "Laws of Attraction."

New Line Cinema
Was it hard to develop the onscreen chemistry between you and Julianne Moore?
No. As long as she would shut up before the take, she was always Chatty Kathy, and I always get nervous and have to remember my lines. But she just plays with such ease and she just chats away to everyone, and there's six pages of dialogue and I'm like whispering to myself, “Please, I'm trying to concentrate here and get my acting together, my performance.”

What’s the secret to a happy marriage?
Oh, I think ultimately it's solving problems because you're always going to have problems in a marriage whether it be money, in the bedroom, the in-laws, too much work, [or] not seeing enough of each other. There's always problems. [It’s about] how you solve those problems and how do you always keep an open line of communication going, and respect.

Do opposites really attract?
Oh, I never thought of it like that, but yes, I suppose in essence, in this case, it could be that opposites attract. I think that Audrey is just so darn stubborn; she liked me from the beginning, but she doesn't want to let on. She wants to win, they both want to win, but she more than him. He will move aside, like he says in the courtroom.

Do you feel you’re encroaching on Hugh Grant’s romantic comedy territory?
Well, what Hugh does, he does so brilliantly. I have the greatest admiration for his work, but I think that there's enough room in the playground for the two of us. I loved doing a romantic comedy. I'd been craving to do a romantic comedy ever since I finished “Remington Steele.”

Are there other genres or types of roles you’re itching to do?
I would really love to do more drama and just on-the-nose drama, I guess. There's this black comedy, “Matador.” We then have another piece, Irish DreamTime has a piece called “Mexicali”, which is an action adventure which I've kind of done, but it's good and the director is good - but drama, drama.

What can you say about “Matador?”
It's with Greg Kinnear, Hope Davis and myself. It's an Irish DreamTime film.

Are bulls involved?
Yeah, there are bulls involved, but it's a metaphor really. He's a hit man who's having a nervous breakdown.

Are you disappointed in the response to “Evelyn?”
Gosh, I wish that we'd had New Line behind us, but it was a good film, wasn't it? I was proud of the film. I had a deal with MGM. Beau [St. Clair] and I have a deal with them. They just renewed us for three years. I shouldn't kvetch too much, should I? Those buggers over there at MGM, they just kind of… They say, "Oh, we're going to platform this film. We're gonna do this." And then the first weekend it didn't behave well and they all ran for the trees.

Is that why there’s a lot of doubt about the next “Bond?”
Oh, I don't know. You'd have to ask them or you'd have to ask the producers.

You’re a producer…
Well, I'm an actor first and foremost, so I can get away with it. My partner is a good producer. I'm loath to call myself a producer, but I certainly have enjoyed making films with Irish DreamTime. And hopefully, we'll be allowed to carry on and make more films. I enjoy kind of looking for the script, looking for the job so to speak, and having control over who you're going to be in the film with, and who's going to work on it. That aspect, I like.

Do you have doubts about signing on to another “Bond?”
Well, I haven't signed for another 'Bond'. My contract is up - four movies.

Do you want to do another one? Do you have doubts about doing another one?
I have no doubts, no. I would love to do another one. They know where to find me. If it's meant to be, then great. If not, that's fine.

Would one more be the last one?
I think that, in my mind, there was only one left for me, and be it that we were discussing it, and had set sail on negotiations.

You don’t want to do seven?
No, I don't think so. I'm 50 years of age now and I think that there comes a point where you just say, “I've been there, to that well. I've done it.” The ones that I've done have been very successful. I think that if you look at them, there's been a progression within my work there, and an assuredness and a confidence. So, if there's to be a fifth, then great.

What do you think of Clive Owen being the next Bond?
I think Clive is a really fine actor. I think Hugh Jackman is a very fine actor. There are a number of fellows out there who could do it.
