Michael Madsen Answers Questions on "Kill Bill"

By , About.com Guide

Following the screening of the "Kill Bill" trailer at the 2003 San Diego Comic Con International, Michael Madsen appeared onstage sporting a Bruce Lee T-Shirt, black leather jacket, and showing off a tattoo on his calf. Why did he show off his calf? Only in response to a question about the barely visible tattoo on his upper arm. Calling that tattoo a mistake, he was more than willing to pull up his pant leg and hoist up his calf for the audience to check out. Madsen went on to warm up the crowd by noting he’d lost a decent amount of weight thanks to his cranberry juice - or as he called it "Fat Flush" - diet.

Looking cool and at home in front of the large, enthusiastic Comic Con crowd, Madsen took questions from the group ranging from the intelligent to the out of left field, "What’s your favorite scary movie?" (Madsen’s answer was "Psycho"). One of the first questions was about the reported split of "Kill Bill" into two movies. Madsen confirmed the "Kill Bill" split and said he believes dividing the film into two parts is the right decision because Quentin Tarantino had so much to say, and so much was captured on film. One movie would force Tarantino to leave out too much and that would be a disservice to the audience. Madsen also revealed the idea of splitting the film started out as a joke on the set. Someone made a comment about making "Kill Bill" into two films, and the idea actually took root.

After kidding around that working with Tarantino again was “a nightmare,” Madsen said Tarantino actually wrote the role in “Kill Bill” specifically for him. Tarantino had originally wanted him for a smaller part (‘Mr. Barrell’), but decided instead to have him play Bill’s (David Carradine) younger brother, Bud.

One Tarantino fan asked Madsen about the contents of the “Pulp Fiction” briefcase. Madsen said he knew what was in it but he’s not allowed to tell. He also admitted he wanted to be in “Pulp Fiction” but was stuck in rehearsals for Lawrence Kasdan’s “Wyatt Earp,” a movie which he labeled “a big waste of time.” When asked his opinion of whether or not Mr. Pink lived, Madsen believes he did and that was why when he first read the script, he was interested in playing Mr. Pink - just because of the fact that he survived.

Of course the subject of a Vega Bros. film also came up. Michael Madsen said he’s really interested in doing the film with John Travolta, and Quentin Tarantino also wants to do the project, possibly as soon as 2004. Madsen admits if the movie is going to get made, it needs to be done soon as neither he nor Travolta are getting any younger.
