The Bottom Line

"The Magdalene Sisters" is a powerful and disturbing movie, made even more so because it's based on true events. Difficult to watch, "The Magdalene Sisters" pulls absolutely no punches in shedding light on the atrocities committed by Catholic nuns in the Magdalene Laundries.

Guide Review - "The Magdalene Sisters" DVD Review

"The Magdalene Sisters" follows the lives of young women as they are taken from their homes and confined to the church-run Magdalene Laundries. Once there, the woman are robbed of their personal dignity as they are put to work cleaning laundry under the supervision of unforgiving and at times sadistic Catholic nuns. Unable to escape this prison, the women find different ways to cope with their sentences.

Featuring stellar performances by Anne-Marie Duff, Nora-Jane Noone, Dorothy Duffy, and Eileen Walsh, "The Magdalene Sisters" is hard viewing yet well worth the effort. What the DVD lacks in the quantity of bonus features, it more than makes up for in quality. After you view the movie, be sure to check out the documentary included on the DVD. Hearing the real women speak of their ordeals really serves to bring the message home.
