"Down With Love" on DVD

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
"Down With Love" playfully reworks an old-style Doris Day/Rock Hudson-type sex comedy of the 1960s, bringing that era of Technicolor magic into the 2000s. With Renee Zellweger in the virginal Doris Day role, and Ewan McGregor as the irrepressible lady-killer, "Down With Love" is loaded with sexual innuendo and makes for a terrific date movie (particularly for older audiences).
Written by Eve Ahlert and Dennis Drake and directed by Peyton Reed, "Down With Love" is an irresistible romantic comedy, a thoroughly captivating homage to the romantic comedies so popular a few decades back.

Ewan McGregor stars as journalist Catcher Block, a "ladies' man, man's man, man about town." Renee Zellweger co-stars as first-time novelist Barbara Novak, a sweet small-town girl who journeys to the Big Apple to make her fame and fortune. Barbara and her literary agent (Sarah Paulson) need Catcher Block's help to promote Barbara's advice book "Down With Love," but Catcher's too busy playing around with a bevy of gorgeous stewardesses to be bothered.

Even without help from Catcher, feminism flourishes as Barbara's book becomes a bestseller, empowering women worldwide to rebel against their domestic chains and join the work force. Sensing there's a story to be had - and feeling a crimp in his love life - Catcher decides to do an exposé on Ms. Novak. Things go awry when sparks fly between the two, and nothing turns out as planned.

Rated PG-13 for sexual humor and dialogue, "Down With Love" didn't make it big at the box office, but will hopefully be discovered by the audience it deserves with its release on DVD.

Stylish, fast-paced, and full of charm, "Down With Love" is a wonderful tribute to the Technicolor world of the 1960s.
