New York, January 27, 2004 - Sony Pictures Classics received four Academy Award nominations for their films: the visually-stunning animated feature TRIPLETTES DE BELLEVILLE (Best Animated Feature Film of the Year & Achievement in Music in Connection with Motion Pictures, Original Song), Errol Morris' powerful documentary FOG OF WAR (Best Documentary Feature) and ZELARY (Best Foreign Language Film of the Year), a unique love story set during Word War II from the Czech Republic.

The nomination for FOG OF WAR as Best Documentary Feature is a triumph for Errol Morris, who has received his first Oscar nomination after making such acclaimed documentaries as THE THIN BLUE LINE, BRIEF HISTORY IN TIME and FAST CHEAP & OUT OF CONTROL.

"We are thrilled that one of the great American maverick filmmakers errol Morris is finally being recognized by the Academy," states Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, co-presidents of Sony Pictures Classics. "And the subject of FOG OF WAR couldn't happen at a more timely moment."

Sony Pictures Classics is not only excited that TRIPLETTES DE BELLEVILLE was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year, but is thrilled that the film has been nominated for Achievement in Music in Connection with Motion Pictures, Original Song in a strong year for movie soundtracks. TRIPLETTES DE BELLEVILLE, which has been embraced by Hollywood for its old fashion animated style, is the first animated film to be recognized by both the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics groups in the same year.

Bernard and Barker continue, "The triumph of TRIPLETTES DE BELLEVILLE is a testament to the genius of Sylvain Chomet and the fresh original music of Benoit Charest. It is comforting to know that an animated feature need not be a huge blockbuster to be recognized by the Academy."

Ondrej Trojan's ZELARY, nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, has been a huge critical and commercial success in its native Czech Republic. With World War II as its backdrop, the film follows the unusual love story of a nurse and a mountain man.

According to Barker and Bernard, The Foreign Language Film category was impressively rich this year. While we are disappointed that our other fine entries did not make it and felt they were certainly deserving, we are thrilled to be handling the Czech movie ZELARY. This nomination will give the film profile that will result in a more meaningful theatrical life throughout America.
