Miramax Gives Audiences a Great Gift by Releasing "Cold Mountain" on Christmas

NEW YORK, Dec. 23, 2003 -- Miramax Film's epic drama "Cold Mountain" will arrive in 2000 plus theatres in North America on Christmas Day. The film, which received eight Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture, will expand its presence in the marketplace by adding additional theatres during the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on January 16, 2004.

Based on the National Book Award winning novel by Charles Frazier, "Cold Mountain" follows the intertwined paths of three people equally uprooted by war whose physical and spiritual survival comes to depend entirely on one another. Cold Mountain's recent Golden Globe nominations were awarded to the film for Best Picture/Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture/Drama, Jude Law, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture/Drama, Nicole Kidman, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Renee Zellweger, Best Director and Best Screenplay, Anthony Minghella, Best Original Score by composer Gabriel Yared, and Best Original Song for "You Will Be My Ain True Love," with words and music by Sting.

"'Cold Mountain' offers tremendous entertainment for adult audiences," said Miramax's Chief Operating Officer Rick Sands. "We know from early screenings of the film that the word of mouth is exceptional and many critics have embraced the movie. Our planned expansion of the film on January 16th, is an illustration of our belief in the long-term playability of 'Cold Mountain'."

Miramax Films, founded by Bob and Harvey Weinstein in 1979, has released some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful independent feature films, with a record fourteen Best Picture nominations over the past eleven consecutive years: "Chicago", "Gangs of New York", "The Hours," "In the Bedroom," "Chocolat," "The Cider House Rules," "Shakespeare In Love," "Life Is Beautiful" (La Vita E Bella), "Good Will Hunting," "The English Patient," "Il Postino" (The Postman) and "The Piano" as well as twenty-one Best Foreign Language Film nominations over the past fifteen years including "Amelie," "Life Is Beautiful," "Kolya," "Mediterraneo" and "Cinema Paradiso."
