Warner Bros. Pictures hosted the Premiere of "Chasing Liberty" on a chilly January night in Hollywood. The weather might not have been very inviting, but Mandy Moore and Matthew Goode seemed not to mind as they strolled the red carpet surrounded by fellow "Chasing Liberty" cast and crew members.
MANDY MOORE ('Anna Foster'):
What to you is the real message of "Chasing Liberty?"
What is the message of this film? To try and figure out who you are.
What makes “Chasing Liberty” appealing to audiences?
It’s a romantic comedy that’s a great movie for right after the holidays. You can go and enjoy what’s on screen, the eye candy. Not me – Matthew (laughing). Matthew’s the eye candy.
What strikes you as romantic?
Oh gosh, sweet little things. Things that you don’t necessarily have to think about. It’s the phone call at the end of the day, or the brief email, or the flowers – the little random things. I’m not a big fan of Valentine’s Day because there’s so much pressure to be romantic or to show affection to the person in your life. I’d much rather get those random sweet thoughts throughout the year, instead of one day.
What’s the last romantic thing you did?
I like to write little notes that say “Hi” or “I love you” and stick them in his luggage or his shoes or something, where he’ll just find them casually kind of out of the blue. It’s nice.
And with the life that you live, there’s a lot of luggage.
(Laughing) Lots of luggage. Living out of luggage and living in hotels.
In the film you break away from your parents in Europe. If you could break away right now, where would you go?
If I could break away and go on vacation or take off for a few days, right now I’d go to somewhere warm because I’m freezing my butt off out here. I don’t know, maybe somewhere convenient like Hawaii.
MATTHEW GOODE ('Ben'):
When I spoke with you at the press junket for "Chasing Liberty," you were nursing a beer.
(Laughing) They wouldn’t allow that here. I would be here with a bottle of Tequila if I could, but I can’t.
What do you think when you hear or read reviews that say you’re the next Brad Pitt or the next Hugh Grant?
I laugh out loud quite generally. But I mean, I suppose it all comes from a good place. I don’t really feel any huge pressure. It’s nice to have comparisons with people like that – Hugh Grant – but I’m not going to get bigheaded about it or anything because I find it all a little embarrassing, really.
What was it like filming in Prague? Any strange experiences filming with the locals?
Well it was great. I’d never been to Prague and Prague was a bit of an eye-opener. It’s also quite a bit cheap, so party city is exactly what that is. But also in Venice, not that Mandy’s not lovely, but [you need] to be with your one true love. Next time I go I’ll know exactly where I need to take someone.
This movie’s all about rebellion and striking out on your own. What was your biggest act of rebellion against your parents?
Oh God, that would have been between the ages of 12 and 18.
All six years?
I was the youngest so I [rebelled against] the whole family by bending the rules my way and general use of herbs and booze at a young age – like any teenager in the world, I suppose.
And now you’ve cleaned yourself up.
And now I’ve cleaned myself up (laughing).
