High-spirited, energetic, and entertaining, "Bend It Like Beckham" stresses going for your dreams, and does so without getting preachy. Featuring great performances from two new talents - Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley - "Bend It Like Beckham" is the sort of positive female empowerment movie every young woman should see.
Parminder Nagra stars as Jess Bhamrag, a young Indian girl who loves British soccer star David Beckham. Keira Knightley co-stars as Jules, an English girl who befriends Jess and convinces her to join a women's soccer team. Jess does so, but has to keep the fact well-hidden from her overly protective and very strict parents. Mr. and Mrs. Bhamrag have many plans for Jess and none of them involve her chasing a round ball up and down a grass field.
Torn between family traditions and her own desires, Jess creates elaborate ruses to fool her parents into believing she's given up soccer. When a love triangle involving Jules and their attractive soccer coach (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) gets thrown into the mix, Jess is stretched too thin and something's bound to snap.
Directed with style by Gurinder Chadha and infused with warmth and humor, "Bend It Like Beckham" is one of the most refreshing comedies of 2003.
