Catching up with Thomas Ian Nicholas ("American Pie's" 'Kevin') at the Los Angeles Premiere of "Legally Blonde 2," Nicholas provided a sneak peek at what's in store for "Pie" fans.
What can we expect from "American Wedding?" How will it be different?
Less story, more laughs. [That's] not to say that there's not a story in the third one, but because everyone knows the characters from the previous two films, there's more of an opportunity for humor. That will hopefully work out.
Do you have a new love interest?
Yes. Finally, my character has moved on. He is not pining for his long-term ex-girlfriend. [My character Kevin and his new girlfriend] kind of get into it and Stifler gets a little jealous because she's hot. But, you know, that was in my contract.
Tell us more about 'Kevin's' love interest.
There's not so much there as much as she's there, if that makes sense. I think it's her first gig, so I'm not sure that anyone's ever heard of her.
So what's her character?
It's just a girl. Seriously, it's just a hot girl that Kevin invites to the wedding that he's been dating for a few months, and Stifler doesn't believe that a girl that hot is with Kevin. That's pretty much the plot point of Kevin's new love interest.
What's Kevin's role in the wedding?
He's one of the groomsmen and tries to help Jim get ready for a wedding in two weeks, which is one of the first turning points that they want to have the wedding sooner so that Grandma will live to see it.
Is there a big bachelor party?
Yes.
What happens?
Nikki Ziering and another girl come to the party, one dressed as a police officer, the other as a French maid. Let your imagination take over from there.
Do we learn anything new about the returning characters?
I think you sort of get to see a softer side of Stifler - if that is possible - for maybe a brief, brief moment. You wonder though, because there's sort of a twist in his character. I don't know if I should give it away because it's pretty funny. There's definitely a new side to Stifler and Finch.
What made you decide to do a third one?
I'm happy to work and I definitely have a lot to be thankful for [with] that franchise because it's opened so many doors for me. So, I think it was like, "Where can we go from here?" Now that it's over, it's kind of like, "Oh cool, I get to say I'm in a trilogy and pay the bills."
Was there a shorthand working together again?
Yeah, I mean, it's definitely easy once you already know each other and the dynamics sort of instantaneously go back to how it began. You sort of play that original role around that group of friends the way that it was almost five years.
Does Jim have another obscene incident?
Jim has many obscene incidents. There are many, many obscene incidents in this film. I guarantee that.
Were there any embarrassing moments on the set?
I think some of the DVD footage that we shot, we shot some stuff that's only going to go on the DVD, and there was some stuff that I just couldn't do. It was just a little too much. And some of it may be in the film, which is bad. Other than [that], the fact that we went to Vegas to celebrate finishing the film and we were staying at the Paris hotel and Bally's is connected. I walked out of Bally's because I couldn't find my way to Paris. I got me a cab and said, "Can you take me to the Paris hotel?" He goes, "You're here." That was an embarrassing moment that I've not really lived down.
