Powerful performances and a heartwrenching story create a dynamic world on film in "21 Grams." Alternately depressing and uplifting, its beautifully fashioned narrative is a fitting follow-up project for the powers behind the critically acclaimed "Amores Perros."

The nonlinear style of storytelling that prevails throughout "21 Grams" is reminiscent of writer/director Christopher Nolan’s approach in "Memento." Jumping forward and backward, the first 30 minutes or so are confusing and at times frustrating. This style allows you to feel temporarily comfortable with your understanding of the film, only to have that minimal level of comfort snatched away as another montage of scenes introduces new twists to the story. While it’s easy to feel lost at first, as the film progresses, the riveting performances and spellbinding storyline combine to create one of 2003’s most engrossing films.

Contrary to popular assumption, 21 grams doesn’t have anything to do with drugs or the drug culture (I’ve lost count of the number of people who’ve asked me if this is a drug movie). The title is a reference to the amount of weight a body supposedly loses at the moment of death. Written by "Amores Perros" screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, "21 Grams" is the story of tragedy and salvation, of destiny and love.

"21 Grams" follows three strangers who find their lives suddenly bound together by a tragic accident. Paul Rivers (Sean Penn) is a college professor in desperate need of a transplant. Cristina Peck (Naomi Watts) is a recovered addict who's turned her life around to become a loving wife and mother. Jack Jordan (Benicio Del Toro), the final member of the triad, is an ex-con who rediscovers religion while struggling to rebuild a life for his wife and young children. When Jack sets events in motion that will destroy Cristina's life and bring new hope into Paul's, he forces each to reassess what's important and find courage in unexpected places.

Sean Penn’s performance as a grieving father in director Clint Eastwood’s crime drama "Mystic River" had the Oscar prognosticators all abuzz. But it’s his emotional yet reserved appearance in "21 Grams" that showcases the power of his acting skills. Should Penn receive an Oscar nod this year, I’m hoping it’s for this tragic story skillfully directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (nominated for an Oscar for "Amores Perros").

Naomi Watts is stunning as the woman at the center of the turmoil. Watts is able to create a sympathetic yet strong woman, full of loss, rage, and a desire for revenge. Benicio Del Toro is particularly impressive as a man haunted by his past and driven to the brink by his inability to act rather than simply react. Award-winning actors all, Del Toro, Watts and Penn run the gamut of emotions and in the hands of Inarritu, the three actors put forth some of the best performances of their careers. Sure to be mentioned at awards time, director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is fast emerging as a major force in independent filmmaking.

Ultimately a story of love and redemption, "21 Grams" uses muted colors, stark landscapes and simple shots to add to the film’s haunting feel. See "21 Grams" with someone who loves to discuss films. Its poignant story will leave you needing to talk about the shared experience.
