I don’t think he’s necessarily the more difficult character. Obviously the way we did it was an unprecedented way of working with characters. It had its own technological challenges. But in terms of the approach to the role, I approached the way I played Gollum exactly the same as I approached any role I’ve ever played, which is understanding how this person thinks and feels and behaves and moves and carries pain. That goes for every single person including Richard in ["13 Going on 30." There’s a whole backstory for the character, which only I need to know about, but what I’m saying is there’s no difference between Gollum and Richard in terms of the approach.
Will you be in Peter Jackson's “King Kong?”
I don’t know yet. I haven’t found out yet. It’s still something that’s up in the air. I’ve got another film coming out later in the year, which is called “Blessed.” It’s a modern retelling of the “Rosemary’s Baby” story. Then I’m almost certainly going to be shooting a film with Joel Schumacher, his next film for New Line. I guess it’s a psychological thriller and that’s a really great role and a great script. That’s the next thing that seems to be looming up on the horizon.
Pete’s talked about various different things but I can’t really comment on that any further until it’s signed and sealed or unless we reach a point where we think it’s a good idea - I can’t really talk about it.
What do you play in “Blessed?”
It takes place in this community where there’s an invitro clinic. This couple can’t have a baby and they go to this community and it’s a bit like Salem, really. Everybody is working for the people who run the center. I play this Italian priest who is really sort of a bit of a detective. Without giving away too much…

“Blessed” was originally referred to as “Samantha’s Child.” Why did they change the title?
I don’t know. They do that. It was a working title. I guess it was a working title because it was called “Rosemary’s Baby” - the original thing - and if they’d called it “Samantha’s Child,” it would have been a little bit too on the nose perhaps.
What’s the Joel Schumacher film you'll be working on?
It’s a film called “23.” Again, I can’t really say too much about it. It’s supposed to be shooting later on this year. It’s a psychological thriller and it’s just a really fresh, wonderful piece of writing about the number 23 enigma, which I won’t go into. But it’s really fresh, original piece.
