The Golden Compass is based on the first film of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy and like the first movie from another trilogy New Line Cinema brought to life on the screen – J R R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings - it sets up the story for future films. That means The Golden Compass is loaded with characters who come and go, all while introducing bits of plot and dispensing needed filler information, adding up to a confusing mass of material to sort through for those who aren’t into Pullman’s books. The nominations for Film Independent’s Spirit Awards had been announced just prior to the Los Angeles press junket for Fox Searchlight’s Juno, a sharp, engaging comedy directed by Jason Reitman and starring Ellen Page as a teenager who gets pregnant and decides to give the baby up for adoption. The Spirit Awards are the indie world’s equivalent of the Academy Awards and while earning Spirit Awards nominations doesn’t guarantee Oscar recognition, it certainly helps the cause. Screenwriter Mark Mahon makes his directorial debut with Strength and Honor, a dramatic movie aimed at boxing fans. The film follows Sean Kelleher (Michael Madsen), a boxer who retires from the ring after accidentally killing his friend.
