Dreamgirls Leads the Pack with 8 Oscar Nominations
Tuesday January 23, 2007
Salma Hayek joined Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis to read off the nominees for 79th Academy Awards and she couldn't contain herself when Penelope Cruz' name came up on the Best Actress list. Hayek was equally as pleased with the Academy's recognition of Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. While Cruz and Pan's Labyrinth's nominations weren't huge surprises, Dreamgirls' lack of nominations in the major categories definitely came as a big jolt for those who had picked it as the film to beat this year. After winning a Golden Globe for the Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, the critically acclaimed Dreamgirls didn't earn either a Best Picture or Best Director nomination.
