Exclusive Interview with Saw III Director Darren Lynn Bousman

Monday October 23, 2006
When I interviewed Darren Lynn Bousman right before the release of Saw II on DVD, the writer/director told me there was no way he'd return as director for Saw III unless the script was perfect. Shortly after our conversation Bousman agreed to direct the third installment of the Saw franchise.

Explaining why he said yes to Saw III Bousman offered, “Even when they first approached me with the idea I said no. I turned it down. Leigh [Whannell] wasn’t involved originally. They just came to me and asked, ‘Would you do Saw III?’ And then Gregg [Hoffman, Saw producer] passed, and we all got together – James [Wan], Leigh and I all got together – and we started talking. We were like, ‘You know they’re going to have someone else direct this film. Someone else is going to write it.’ I was like, ‘That’s not what we want to leave behind. • Box Office Report - Oct 20-22
The Prestige pulled a box office win out of its hat, topping the weekly charts with $14+ million in business during its opening weekend. With a $40 million budget, the performance of The Prestige had to have made Touchstone Pictures' execs pretty happy. The studio execs behind Flags of Our Fathers are probably not feeling quite as chipper. Clint Eastwood's WWII pic only managed a third place finish, losing out on second to Scorsese's The Departed. Scorsese's Boston mob vs the State Police film is on its way to being the acclaimed filmmaker's biggest hit.

Top 10 Films for the Weekend Ending 10/22/06:
    1) The Prestige - $14,801,808
    2) The Departed - $13,462,256
    3) Flags of Our Fathers - $10,245,190
    4) Open Season - $8,162,729
    5) Flicka - $7,703,551
    6) The Grudge 2 - $7,652,791
    7) Man of the Year - $6,935,515
    8) Marie Antoinette - $5,361,050
    9) The Marine - $3,795,160
    10) Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - $3,779,829
