Kirsten Dunst Talks About Marie Antoinette

Monday October 16, 2006
Kirsten Dunst stars as Marie Antoinette in writer/director Sofia Coppola's lavish look at the Queen of France, beginning with her marriage to Louis XVI and ending when she is forced out of Versailles by an angry mob.

Coppola was granted permission to shoot Marie Antoinette in Versailles, and Dunst says being able to walk the same halls that Marie Antoinette did helped her get into character. "I couldn't imagine having to shoot this in Burbank or something like that. I always sense the essence and the atmosphere of a movie. I think that's what Sofia evokes so powerfully in her films, is atmosphere. I don't think she could have made this movie anywhere else. For me, to have that - it's a character in itself. I could walk around at night before I shot the balcony scene and look in mirrors and touch the wall and look at a clock. To be in a place where you think, 'Well, maybe she looked at this clock,' and, 'I wonder if she looked at herself in the mirror when she was feeling…' Your imagination, there's so much to feed when you're actually in the places." Friday the 13th wasn't bad luck for The Grudge 2 starring Amber Tamblyn, Arielle Kebbel, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Although the sequel didn't do nearly as well as the first American remake of Ju-On (The Grudge opened with $39 million in 2004), it did well enough to knock Martin Scorsese's The Departed into second place. While most studio releases did about was expected this weekend, for one independent production it was the end of a long winning streak. For the first time since its release back in August, The Illusionist finally left the Top 10 list.

Top 10 Films for the Weekend Ending 10/15/06:
    1) The Grudge 2 - $20,825,300
    2) The Departed - $19,034,294
    3) Man of the Year - $12,299,380
    4) Open Season - $11,112,795
    5) Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - $7,485,290
    6) The Marine - $7,138,744
    7) The Guardian - $5,866,998
    8) Employee of the Month - $5,271,088
    9) One Night with the King - $4,106,862
    10) Jackass Number Two - $3,329,091
