This Week's New Releases

Sunday July 24, 2005
Director Phil Morrison's first feature film hits theaters this week, and if you're looking for a interesting alternative to big summer comedies and action movies - and you're a fan of indie films - then "Junebug's" worth checking out. The story follows a career-minded young man (played by Alessandro Nivola) who brings his new bride - a British art dealer - home to meet his very peculiar family for the first time.

Jessica Simpson, a pink bikini, and very short shorts star in "The Dukes of Hazzard," Warner Bros' big screen version of the classic TV series. Oh yeah, "Dukes" also stars Seann William Scott and Johnny Knoxville as Bo and Luke Duke, good ol' boys who have to save the family farm.

"The Dukes of Hazzard" has the weekend to itself as its the week's only major release. I guess Simpson and her Daisy Dukes scared away the competition...

    Box Office Report - July 29-31, 2005
Audiences are saying no to big-budget action movies and yes to family films and comedies. In its third week of release the Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn adult comedy, "Wedding Crashers," finished in first place at the box office, easily trouncing all newcomers.

"Stealth" nosedived into fourth place, a very disappointing showing for Sony's military-themed action film starring Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel, and Jamie Foxx. Meanwhile "Must Love Dogs" and "Sky High" performed about as expected. While they didn't finish on top of the charts, they made over $10 million each and brought in just about what Warner Bros and Disney had anticipated they'd earn.

Top 10 Films for the Weekend Ending 07/31/05:
    1) "Wedding Crashers" - $20,023,159
    2) "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" - $16,384,332
    3) "Sky High" - $14,631,784
    4) "Stealth" - $13,251,545
    5) "Must Love Dogs" - $12,855,321
    6) "Fantastic Four" - $6,912,725
    7) "The Island" - $5,963,223
    8) "Bad News Bears" - $5,634,919
    9) "War of the Worlds" - $5,481,239
    10) "March of the Penguins" - $4,030,894
