Not that this is in the least bit surprising but Marvel and IMAX have officially announced Thor: The Dark World will open in IMAX 3D theaters internationally on October 30, 2013 (followed by a release in conventional theaters on November 8). The second Thor film will be digitally re-mastered into IMAX 3D.
In the official announcement Disney Studios Exec. Vice President Dave Hollis said, "All the nine realms will be stunningly displayed when Thor: The Dark World arrives in IMAX 3D. We continue to have great success with IMAX and are thrilled to once again work with them to bring the Marvel Universe to life in this premium format."
Returning for the sequel are Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander and Rene Russo. The 2011 film was directed by Kenneth Branagh; the sequel is directed by Alan Taylor.
The official synopsis: "Marvel's Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the nine realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel's Thor and Marvel's The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos ... but an ancient race, led by the vengeful Malekith, returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all."
