Just an hour or so before my one-on-one interview with director Niels Arden Oplev (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) for his first American feature film, Dead Man Down, news broke that he's going to direct the remake of Flatliners. The original sci-fi/horror thriller was released back in 1990 and starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin and Kevin Bacon and was directed by Joel Schumacher. There hasn't been any movement on the remake idea for quite a while, but today it popped into the news with Niels Arden Oplev's interest in the project.
At the end of my 20 minute interview with the Danish filmmaker, I asked him if he had anything he could say about Flatliners. And, chuckling, he replied:
"I can only say that that is a really interesting project that is under negotiation."
That's all I got out of him, which was truthfully more than I thought he would say. Although I'm not a big fan of remakes, I think this one might actually work - and Niels Arden Oplev and Flatliners seems like a good match of director and material.
