Jeremy RennerDeadline's reporting the dramatic film Kill the Messenger has found its leading man. Jeremy Renner, currently on screens in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, has signed up to star in the much-anticipated movie based on the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb.

Kill the Messenger was adapted by Peter Landesman from two books - Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion by Gary Webb and Maxine Waters and Kill the Messenger: How the CIA's Crack-Cocaine Controversy Destroyed Journalist Gary Webb by Charles Bowden.

Webb was a San Jose Mercury News reporter who exposed the link between the CIA and a plan to arm rebels in Nicaragua. Webb killed himself after having his life ruined when he became the target of a smear campaign.

Michael Cuesta (Homeland, 12 and Holding) is attached to direct and Renner will be producing along with Scott Stuber and Don Handfield.
