Sony Pictures is this|close to having a director for the musical Annie. Will Gluck, director of Easy A, is in negotiations - according to the studio - to helm the project which used to have Willow Smith attached in the lead role. She's no longer involved as she's now a little too old for the role (that's how long it's been in the works).
This big screen adaptation will bring the story forward to a modern day setting. Gluck's involvement would also include taking a crack at the script, most recently worked on by Aline Brosh McKenna.
Based on the film's history, it's possible that the targeted fall start date will come and go without any orphans being cast. However, if Gluck does commit to the project, the studio could deliver Annie to theaters in 2014.
In making the announcement of the potential director, Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad and President of Production Hannah Minghella stated: "After seeing firsthand his work on several films for Sony, including Easy A and Friends with Benefits, we're huge fans of Will Gluck. At the helm of Annie, he will bring to this film all the charm of the original Broadway production while also appealing to a new generation."
